Read Good enough practices in scientific computing before you start in the lab. We try to follow this advice, within reason, and it helps to make our work easier and more reproducible.

Also consider reading “On Bullshit” by Harry G Frankfurt and watching some of Richard Feynman’s exposition of the scientific method.
